Where can you get fresh shrimp?
Did you know fresh water prawns (shrimp) are locally grown in Fairfield County Ohio? Really! They are being grown on a family run operation outside of Rushville, Ohio. Freshwater prawns are similar to shrimp. "They have the consistency of lobster, but taste like shrimp." Freshwater prawns have a short growing season and can be grown in Ohio. They arrive as 0.5" long hatchlings and spend the summer eating and growing. "We feed them a high protein enriched diet that promotes quick growth," said Don Maloney, the owner of the operation. "We harvest them in 110 days." "It's cool being able to see them after they've gotten bigger," said Katelyn Maloney, who does most of the feeding.
"It's like having a huge aquarium in your back yard. Every day you have to feed them, check the oxygen level, water temperature, and the pH," said Kathy Maloney. The prawns will be harvested on Saturday September 15, 2012. They are drained live from the pond and put in a series of tanks with the last tank being the chill tank. At that time they are available for purchase. But, the prawns are not packaged like shrimp you buy from the store. They have the heads on, and you need to do a little prep work before they can be eaten. "Removing the heads is no worse than cutting up a chicken for dinner," said Kathy Maloney. "It is worth it because they are delicious."
This is the third year for prawns. "We had no idea what to expect last year, and were pleasantly surprised with the harvest. Aquaculture like any farming is a risky business. You never know what the weather will do. We're expecting a large harvest, but you never know what could happen," said Maloney. "We invite you to come out for the harvest on Saturday September 15, 2012. You can watch the harvest going on or participate if you want and you can purchase fresh prawns." The hours are from 11:00am -2:00pm or until we sell out. "It's a lot of fun," said Dillan Maloney.
The Maloney prawn pond is located at 7440 Coonpath Rd NE Lancaster, Ohio. (Outside of West Rushville, Ohio). If you have questions call 740-536-9003 or email us.
